Boston, MA—April 18, 2012—Wentworth Institute of Technology’s student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) earned fourth place overall in the 2012 Northeast Regional Student Steel Bridge Competition.
Wentworth’s interdisciplinary team of civil engineering, civil engineering technology, construction management, and electromechanical engineering students competed against 12 other participating colleges and universities in the competition, which focused on increasing student awareness of real-world engineering issues. The challenge required students to design, fabricate, and construct a 30-inch-wide, 23-foot-long, 3-foot-tall steel bridge that could hold 2,500 pounds. A significant aspect of the competition is speed of construction, as no one piece can be longer than 36 inches, nor weigh more than 20 pounds. The structure was judged on construction speed, lightness, deflection, efficiency, and display.
